Session Type(s): Training
Training Tag(s): Communications
Starts: Saturday, Aug. 20 2:00 PM (Eastern)
Ends: Saturday, Aug. 20 3:00 PM (Eastern)
Knowing how to talk to voters about critical issues like race, health care and health inequities, taxes, abortion, and immigration begins with an accurate understanding of how the mind and brain work. Join us for a messaging training that’s grounded in cutting edge psychology and neuroscience, as well as message testing with more than 100,000 voters on a range of issues. We’ll talk about how to avoid using linguistic constructions such as “the unemployed,” which turn real people into abstractions. To elicit empathy or concern, use “people who …” constructions. For example: “People who’ve lost their jobs through no fault of their own.” We’ll dig into the language of race, talk about how many of the words, phrases, and narratives we use are playing into the hands of the right.
Got an idea for a panel or training you’d like to see at Netroots Nation this summer? Our annual call for submissions will open February 10! Make sure you’re on our email list to get updates.
