The New Netroots: Getting the Web We Want

Recent success of the Internet rights activism shows that issues like copyright reform, universal access to open networks and online privacy resonate deeply with people in the U.S. and around the globe. The hacker collective Anonymous has mobilized an unknown army of online activists in defense of Internet freedoms worldwide; pro-democracy dissidents across the Middle East and North Africa have used the Internet as a vital tool for organizing protest and fighting censorship; the death of Aaron Swartz has amplified support for his fight to free knowledge and make it accessible to all, and new coalitions of organizers and technologists are building community networks to connect people in the poorest communities. The community is diverse and widespread but do we really get along? We’ll hear from representatives from each of these movements in a frank discussion about common values and objectives as the broader Internet freedom community gains momentum.

Timothy Karr
Timothy Karr is the Senior Director of Strategy for Free Press, the largest national organization fighting for everyone’s right to connect and communicate. Timothy builds on his background as a journalist and organizer to advance Free Press’ campaigns to win universal access to open networks, and defend freedom of expression. Before joining Free Press, Tim served as executive director of MediaChannel.org and vice president of Globalvision New Media. He has also worked extensively as an editor, reporter and photojournalist for the Associated Press, Time, Inc., the New York Times and Australia Consolidated Press. Tim critiques, analyzes and reports on media and media policy for the Huffington Post and on his personal blog, MediaCitizen.

Ellery Roberts Biddle
Ellery is the editor of Global Voices Advocacy. A project of the Global Voices online citizen media network, Global Voices Advocacy promotes free expression and privacy online by reporting on challenges, victories and emerging trends in Internet rights around the world.
Before joining GVA, Ellery worked as a policy analyst with the Center for Democracy & Technology, where she managed a range of free expression and Internet governance-focused research and advocacy projects for CDT’s international program. Ellery has a master’s degree in public policy and Latin American studies from the University of Chicago, where she developed deep expertise in the politics and policies of Internet use in Cuba. She has also worked as an intern and researcher with the OpenNet Initiative at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. She blogs about her research and thoughts on Cuba at ellerybiddle.com.
Rainey Reitman
Rainey is the activism director of EFF, which defends liberty in the digital world. She is also a founder and steering committee member for the Bradley Manning Support Network, a network of individuals and organizations advocating for the release of accused WikiLeaks whistleblower Pfc. Bradley Manning. Additionally, she serves on the board of the directors for the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, a nonprofit whose mission is to organize and support an effective, national grassroots movement to restore civil liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. She is also a steering committee member of the Internet Defense League, a netroots coalition working to fend off threats to the free and open Web.
Recently, she co-founded Freedom of the Press Foundation, a nonprofit organization that crowd-sources funding to supporting unique, independent, nonprofit journalistic institutions, where she also serves as Chief Operating Officer.
