Keynote: Van Jones
This morning plenary on eco-equality will be given by one of the country's leading advocates for social justice and shared green prosperity. Mayor Gavin Newsom will provide an introduction.
Van Jones is the founder and president of Green For All. He is working to combine solutions to America’s two biggest problems: social inequality and environmental destruction.
In 1996, Van founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. Named for an unsung civil rights heroine, the Center promotes alternatives to violence and incarceration. Van's honors include the 1998 Reebok International Human Rights Award, the international Ashoka Fellowship, selection as a World Economic Forum "Young Global Leader," and the Rockefeller Foundation "Next Generation Leadership" Fellowship.
A 1993 Yale Law graduate, he is also a husband and father.
After only 36 days as mayor, Gavin Newsom gained worldwide attention when he directed city officials to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. This bold move set the tone for Newsom’s first term. He brought universal health care to the city’s uninsured. The city became a center for biotech and clean tech. And Newsom aggressively pursued local solutions to global climate change.
In 2007, Newsom was re-elected with over 73% of the vote. Since then he has built upon the success of his first term, launching new environmental initiatives and a comprehensive strategy to transform the city’s most troubled neighborhood.
