Sure, Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare are all the rage. And you know you should be using them as part of your overall communication and campaign strategies. But what you don't know can hurt--and hurt badly. This workshop will knock your socks off with stories and strategy from the front lines of social media. We'll bring in real-life case studies to demonstrate the dos and don'ts and offer tips on strategy, storytelling, tactics and metrics for success. A hands-on, pontificating-free panel is guaranteed.

Deanna Zandt

Deanna Zandt is a media technologist and the author of Share This! How You Will Change the World with Social Networking (Berrett-Koehler, June 2010). She is a consultant to key progressive media organizations including AlterNet and Jim Hightower’s Hightower Lowdown, and is a Research Fellow at the Center for Social Media at American University. Zandt specializes in social media, is a leading expert in women and technology, and is a frequent guest on CNN International, BBC Radio, Fox News and more. She works with groups to create and implement effective web strategies toward organizational goals of civic engagement and empowerment, and uses her background in linguistics, advertising, telecommunications and finance to complement her technical expertise. She has spoken at a number of conferences, including Netroots Nation, SXSW Interactive, Personal Democracy Forum, the National Conference on Media Reform, Facing Race, Web 2.0 Expo, Bioneers, America’s Future Now (formerly “Take Back America,”) Women Action & The Media, and provides beginner and advanced workshops both online and in person.

Aspen Baker

Aspen Baker is the leading voice in the nation on the personal experiences of women with abortion. She is the Executive Director of Exhale, an award winning pro-voice organization that works nationally to change the culture around abortion. An innovative national nonprofit, Exhale utilizes new technologies to promote wellbeing and foster community amongst women after abortion; and to develop listening and storytelling practices that create abortion peace. As a spokesperson for Exhale, Ms. Baker has been featured in a variety of media outlets across the country, including T.V. and radio, on such programs as CNN Headline News, Fox National News, Ladies Home Journal, New York Times Magazine, National Public Radio, San Francisco Chronicle, Alternet, Bust and many more. Aspen serves as a Public Ethics Commissioner in the City of Oakland, California; is a 2011 fellow with Emerge California; and recently, she earned an award as a "Local Hero" by San Francisco's KQED.

Cheryl Contee

Cheryl Contee, Partner at Fission Strategy, specializes in helping non-profit organizations and foundations use social media to create social good. She is also the co-founder of Jack and Jill Politics writing as “Jill Tubman” on one of the top 10 black blogs online. Cheryl is included in The Root 100 list of established and emerging African-American leaders. Fast Company has named her one of their 2010 Most Influential Women in Tech. She has over 13 years of award-winning interactive expertise and previously served as Vice President and lead digital strategist for Fleishman-Hillard’s West Coast region in San Francisco. Cheryl has appeared in the Washington Post, New York Times, San Francisco Magazine, BBC, and CNN, among other media appearances. She is also proud to serve on several boards and advisory committees: Netroots Nation, BlogHer, Blogging While Brown, Applied Research Center, and CommonGoods.Net. She received her B.A. from Yale University and has an International Executive M.B.A. from Georgetown University. In her spare time, Ms. Contee enjoys hiking, yoga, movies and tai chi sword.

Anita Jackson

Anita Sarah Jackson is the director of social media and blogging for MomsRising.org. She leads the innovative social media campaigns that spur grassroots action, organizational growth and partnerships, and lawmakers' attention. Her social media strategies have also gained earned media for MomsRising, as with the coverage following their Tweetchat with Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Anita earned her AB from UC Berkeley and her JD from American University's Washington College of Law, where she focused on human rights in both complex litigation and international peace negotiations.

Rachel LaBruyere

Rachel is the Director of Mobile Strategy at Mobile Commons. She works to find creative and innovative ways for campaigns and organizations to use mobile as an integrated part of their strategy. From recruiting volunteers and organizing house parties, to making a huge impact on the legislative process, mobile is where it’s at folks (at least according to Rachel).

In her time with the Reform Immigration FOR America campaign, Rachel was responsible for growing one of the largest and most active mobile opt in lists ever. Most importantly, Rachel took an exciting new technology and integrated it into an existing movement, while managing the organization and organizers involved.
