Overcoming Organizational Resistance to Change
Progressive groups are often led by individuals who are unfamiliar with the online world, yet aren't willing to take direction from interns, new hires or younger employees. The fact is online tools and online power are destabilizing factors for many organizations – especially long-standing institutions or under-resourced nonprofits. This workshop will help you break through by identifying the root problems preventing groups from engaging in online organizing. We will explore strategies that empower netroots people working at nonprofits to “manage up” and help their organization succeed.
Charles Lenchner is a co-founder of Organizing 2.0 a conference and resource center for online and community organizing based in New York City. He is currently writing a white paper (with support from the New Organizing Institute) addressing the labor movement’s use of new media and online organizing tools. He has previously worked with the Working Families Party and Democracy In Action. He has more than 20 years experience working in nonprofits and political organizations.
Elana Levin is Director of Communications for the Writers Guild of America, East, a labor union that represents professional writers in film, television, digital media and radio.
Most recently Elana was Assistant Director of Communications for New Media for the SEIU affiliate Workers United and before that, UNITE HERE. She ran communications for the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy where she launched the popular DMIBlog. She is a co-Founder of Organizing 2.0--- a group that leads workshops on online tools and strategy for grassroots organizers.
