Through engaging leading organizers and providers of online fundraising tools, this panel will emphasize how to marshall the infrastructure (both digital and human) to enable more and better online grassroots fundraising. Expanding online support will enable the Netroots to play an increasing role in supporting, financing and propelling campaigns that reflect our progressive values. How do campaigns provide infrastructure to enable grassroots fundraising? What platforms and techniques are available? We'll go over tips and tricks for candidates and campaigns, as well as best practices for issue-based and candidate-based online grassroots fundraising. This panel will talk about what works and what doesn't, share great ideas and best practices and serve as a resource for folks who want to do more fundraising in small dollars through new media.

Katherine Haenschen

Katherine Haenschen is an activist and blogger in Austin, TX. Currently, Katherine is managing the Travis County Democratic Party's coordinated campaign, working to elect Democrats at all levels of the ballot and turn Texas blue! She is also a staff writer for Burnt Orange Report. A native of New Jersey, Katherine got her start in politics in 2004 while living on the South Side of Chicago. Her then-State Senator Barack Obama ran for Senate, and she thought he was cool enough to get involved. She has been a dedicated field rat ever since.

Chris Massicotte

Christopher is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at NGP Software, the leading provider of campaign technology to Democrats. NGP works with over 1500 candidates from state legislative, local and down ballot candidates to all but one of the major Democratic Candidates for President in 2008, providing them with the tools to run outstanding campaigns, online and offline, regardless of their budgets.

With extensive business and technological expertise, Christopher became deeply involved in politics in 2002. Working as a campaign treasurer and fundraiser for a state representative and as a field director on Pennsylvania Governor Rendell’s 2002 campaign, Christopher embraced technology early. Just before starting at NGP in 2005, Christopher served as Finance Director for Congressman Rush Holt (D-NJ), one of only a few scientists in Congress and who, as one of the first candidates endorsed by MoveOn.org, was recognized for his early use of email in donor outreach to his considerable contact list.

Christopher earned his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Villanova University and his Masters degree in Government Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. Before immersing himself in the political realm, he worked as an Information Systems Auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and then fulfilled the role of IT Security Officer at the University of Pennsylvania.

Erin Hill

Erin Hill is the Executive Director of ActBlue, the nation's largest source of funds for Democrats. Since 2004, ActBlue has sent over $138,000,000 to 6,000 distinct Democratic candidates and committees at every level of politics from local to federal. Hill joined ActBlue in 2005 and served as Political Director during the 2007-2008 cycle where she helped expand to all 50 states and nurtured thousands of grassroots fundraisers. Since becoming Executive Director in 2009 Prior to joining ActBlue, Hill worked on the finance staffs of the Kerry-Edwards campaign and the Democratic National Committee. She has also worked as a member of finance and strategic staffs for races up and down the ballot in both DC and her home state of Massachusetts.

Karl Singer

Karl Singer (Populista) starting getting interested in politics in 2006 when he decided a guy named Barack Obama should run for President. Soon he found blogs and got into the world of action where he was part of the best field team in history and started the Obamathon and Obamajority projects that raised over sixty five thousand dollars for Barack Obama and progressive Congressional candidates. Recently he helped draft and campaign for R.T. Rybak's bid for governor of Minnesota, an equally good but ultimately unsuccessful effort.

He currently resides in Minnesota where he writes for the Minnesota Progressive Project, works for good candidates and studies for the SAT.

Karl-Thomas Musselman

Having written for Burnt Orange Report since 2003, Musselman became the site's owner in the summer of 2005. Shortly thereafter, he spearheaded UT-Austin efforts against the state's constitutional ban on equal marriage rights resulting in a 1,000% increase in student turnout with an opposition vote averaging 85% on the measure. In 2006, he served as Tech Director for the Travis County Coordinated Campaign and wrote for the Secretary of State Project which elected 5 new Democratic officeholders in key states across the country. During this time he joined the steering committee of Democracy for Texas, the state's largest online progressive advocacy PAC at the time.

In 2007, Musselman took on the new role of Publisher of Burnt Orange Report upon his acceptance of employment at ActBlue in Cambridge, MA and graduation from UT-Austin as a Liberal Arts Honors Government major. He has since returned to his native Texas where he worked on Rick Noriega's US Senate campaign, served as Campaign Manager for Rep. Mark Strama who was re-elected with 63% of the vote, and was a technology advisor for Bill Spelman's Place 5 City Council campaign in 2009.

He currently sits on the board of the TexBlog PAC, the Austin Stonewall Democrats, ALGPC, and the City of Austin Comprehensive Plan Advisory Task Force and works for ActBlue.
