Freelancers of the World, Unite! Unions for Permatemps and Freelancers
Permalance, freelance, precarious labor. More and more professionals are working outside of traditional employment models. A lot of the time it sucks, but it doesn’t have to. Freelancers can join unions, and in some industries they have been doing so for decades. You'll leave this panel with a deeper understanding of the freelance economy. We'll also discuss organizing your workplace and look at various public policy changes that could help freelancers.
Elana Levin is Director of Communications for the Writers Guild of America, East, a labor union that represents professional writers in film, television, digital media and radio.
Most recently Elana was Assistant Director of Communications for New Media for the SEIU affiliate Workers United and before that, UNITE HERE. She ran communications for the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy where she launched the popular DMIBlog. She is a co-Founder of Organizing 2.0--- a group that leads workshops on online tools and strategy for grassroots organizers. Althea Erickson is the Associate Director of Advocacy and Policy at Freelancers Union, where she led its successful 2009 campaign to repeal the Unincorporated Business Tax, saving NYC freelancers up to $3400/year, launched its Political Action Committee, and recently introduced a bill in the NYS Legislature to protect freelancers from unpaid wages. Prior to Freelancers Union, Althea worked as a Research Associate at the Rockefeller Foundation, where she focused on strategies to build economic security within the U.S. workforce. Althea also has extensive organizing and campaign experience, including organizing women on welfare in the NYC suburbs, leading the NY arm of a successful corporate social responsibility campaign against JP Morgan Chase, and running a hip-hop youth center in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
Justin Molito is the Director of Organizing for the Writers Guild of America, East. Molito was a lead organizer and area organizing director for AFSCME, as well as an organizer for SEIU International and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, and the Strategic Director for the Transport Workers Union.
From slaughter house workers in North Carolina and Florida, nurses in Florida, Homecare workers in Baltimore, to state workers in Kentucky and University workers in Maryland,he has had the privilege to participate in many struggles over the past 14 years. He even got to spend a summer at Walt Disney World.
As Director of Organizing at WGAE, he has expanded the Guild’s organizing program and launched campaigns to raise standards and build power for digital content creators and non-fiction tv content creators.
When not organizing against the excesses of capitalism and for justice, he enjoys spending time with his two year old son Pike and his wife Leah.
Joe Danisi has written, directed and produced dozens of non-fiction documentaries for television networks such as the History Channel, Discovery, A&E, TLC, Bravo, MSNBC, TruTV, et al. He received a U.S. Congressional Commendation for an episode of Court TV's POWER, PRIVILEGE AND JUSTICE about a fatal case of domestic violence.
Theatrically, his plays, ROAMIN' HOLIDAY, HOMEFRONT, and ALCHEMY have been produced in New York by Naked Angels and other companies. Plays recently directed in New York include SO TELL ME, WHAT CAN I DO? and MOM WAS A CARNY at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Playwrights Horizons. Joe is the Director of Tuesdays@9, Naked Angels' play and screenplay development program. He lives in New York City.
