Going on Offense: Austerity is Dead

Going on Offense: Austerity is Dead

Session Type(s): Panel

Starts: Thursday, Jun. 20 1:30 PM (Eastern)

Ends: Thursday, Jun. 20 2:45 PM (Eastern)

Duncan Black has successfully brought the case for expanding Social Security from the progressive blogosphere to the pages of USA Today. Duncan explains how he has flipped the austerity script—and how other progressives can duplicate his efforts.

Alex Lawson of Social Security Works will join Duncan in conducting the training. Social Security Works engaged the Topos Partnership and KNP communications to research current opinions about Social Security, pinpoint where the program fits into people’s cognitive schemas, and develop a proactive messaging framework that would even convince skeptics. Their findings may surprise you, but the evidence is compelling.

Progressives have been fighting the battle to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for years. But, why are we merely defending the programs when we face a retirement security crisis? Social Security and Medicare are the solution, not the problem. Pushing for their expansion is both good policy and good politics. We can put the austerity crowd on the defensive.
